One of the ways that I get inspired to build is by looking for problems that need solutions. I think of myself as much more of an architect than an artist. So here is my latest inspiration, my mom. She has one of those pet doors installed in her sliding glass door. This makes the door impossible to secure with a conventional lock. So the best way to lock the door is by putting a piece of wood in the slot between the door and the end of the window. I am always worried about her forgetting to put that piece of wood back into the slot, creating an opportunity for a homeless drifter to come in and murder her. I don't blame her for forgetting to secure the door. The slot is in a very awkward angle with her furniture, and the hanging blinds. My daughter reached down into the slot, and found a spider sitting of the wood. Not a great situation. So I decided to create a solution using my building skills. I'm not set on a name for it. The basic description is "Sliding Door Break". If you think of something, let me know. It's a device designed to bring that piece of wood into the modern era. It provides a handle about 33 inches tall to easily move it in, and out of the slot, saving your back. I designed it to have an adjustable length to fit into the slot behind most sliding glass doors, whether they have a pet door, or not. My first version was too narrow, and top heavy, so I added a wider base to each piece. Considering that it may be handled regularly, I made the joints on the vertical rod thicker. I also added a red handle to make it easier to see.
